On January 30:

1863 — Joseph Jastrow was born. He earned the first doctorate from the first formal PhD program in psychology in the United States, at Johns Hopkins University under G. Stanley Hall in 1886. His writing presented a scientific view of psychology to the general public, and he organized the psychology pavilion at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. APA President, 1900.

1929 — Roger N. Shepard was born. Shepard pioneered work in cognitive structures, with special attention given to the invention of nonmetric multidimensional scaling. He also contributed to the understanding of cognitive process with his studies of mental imagery. APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, 1976. National Medal of Science, 1995.

1963 — The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development began operation.

1986 — APA President Robert Perloff presented the APA Presidential Citation to Nancy Reagan for her efforts in combating drug abuse. Reagan promoted the "Just Say No" campaign against drug abuse.
