On June 9:

1977 — The APA published new "Guidelines for Nonsexist Language in APA Journals" in The American Psychologist.

1980 — The petition to create APA Division 42 (Psychologists in Independent Practice) was filed. Richard Samuels was the chair of the petitioning group. The Council of Representatives approved the division on January 23, 1981.

1989 — The first American Psychological Society convention began, in Alexandria, Virginia. George Miller was the first speaker and James L. McGaugh was the first elected president.
