1907 - Clifford W. Beers's A Mind That Found Itself: An Autobiography was published. The book documented Beers's treatment by the mental health establishment and became the bible of the mental hygiene movement of the early 1900s.
1933 - Stanley Milgram was born. Milgram is well-known for his studies of obedience to authority, but he also wrote influential articles on the effects of urban environments on behavior and other topics in applied social psychology.
1934 - The Journal of Experimental Psychology received John R. Stroop's manuscript, "Studies of Interference in Serial Verbal Reactions," the first report of the "Stroop effect."
1947 - José Szapocznik was born. Szapocznik has distinguished himself with research and practice in mental health issues of Hispanic populations. He has paid special attention to family therapy techniques and problems of drug abuse. APA Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions, 1991.
1950 - The National Institute on Neurological Disease and Blindness was authorized by Public Law 81-692. This agency is now called the National Institute on Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
1963 - The state of Illinois adopted its psychologist licensure law.
1975 - Charles A. Kiesler became the executive officer of the APA, succeeding Kenneth B. Little and preceding Michael S. Pallak.
1988 - The American Psychological Association of Graduate Students held its first meeting in Atlanta, one day after an organizational symposium and APA Council of Representatives approval. David Pilon and Scott Mesh were elected cochairs of the new body.
1991 - The APA Council of Representatives voted to include student representatives.
