APA Historical Database: Selected Entries

On September 25:

1863 - Edmund Delabarre was born. Delabarre was a general experimental psychologist who founded the laboratory at Brown University in 1892 and was one of the founders of the APA.

1904 - Robert Ward Leeper was born. Leeper expanded on the work of Kurt Lewin, applying Lewin's field concepts to learning, personality, and emotions. His theories were precursors to cognitive learning theory.

1953 - Edgar A. Doll's The Measurement of Social Competence: A Manual for the Vineland Social Maturity Test was published.

1957 - The Human Factors Society was officially established at its first national meeting and constitutional convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Laurence E. Morehouse was interim president of the organization until Renato Contini was elected president. In 1993 the organization's name was changed to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

1958 - The first meeting of APA Division 22 (Rehabilitation Psychology) was held. Frederick Whitehouse was the division's first president.

1970 - Norman H. Nie, Dale H. Bent, and C. Hadlai Hull's first Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) manual was published. Revisions of this computer statistical package continue to be widely used by behavioral scientists.
