Click2learn Packager for Single Asset Files
Version 0.3 - April 7, 2003

What it does

In order to turn an asset file into a SCORM package that can be tracked by a LMS, a collection of files that includes a wrapper for the asset and a manifest must be created. This collection of files is the package. The manifest lists all the files in the package and also shows how they are organized. The manifest also contains metadata, or data about the package, such as title, description, etc.

The manifest and the metadata are encoded in XML, which is a nice language for geeks and computers, but not a very friendly language for human beings. This packager application does the hard work for you, and you don't have to see any XML in the process.

If you need to create SCORM packages that include multiple assets, or to combine these assets with assessments or other learning content, or to turn some types of assets such as Word documents into HTML content that can be delivered as SCORM content, you should probably use a heavy duty tool like the Aspen LCMS environment (see www.click2learn.com for details). The Aspen LCMS is entirely web based and also helps you manage and maintain your assets in a multi-user, enterprise class collaborative environment.

To package an asset file

  1. Click the "Locate the file" button and locate the file to package.
  2. When prompted, set the presentation option(s). This includes the option to add a prompt to invite the user to "mark" the item as completed when it is presented by a SCORM player.
  3. When prompted, add the metadata required by SCORM.
  4. Click the "Build Package" button

That's it! You can now test your package using the SCORM 1.2.3 test suite, send it to someone else to load into a LMS, etc.

The asset file to package must be an asset file that can be delivered through a browser, i.e. a file for which a MIME type is defined in the web server of the repository or LMS that will be used to deliver the SCORM package. Common file types supported this way include Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt), Microsoft Word (.doc), various image formats (GIF, JPEG) and, on some servers, even video or audio clips. Note that the web server from which these files will be delivered must have the appropriate MIME association for the file types you want to use.

This packager is not designed to support HTML files, as those typically require associated files and the packager does not include a facility to gather those files. There is one exception: if you saved a PowerPoint XP or PowerPoint 2000 presentation as HTML, the packager can gather the dependent files when you locate the "root" HTML file correctly, because PowerPoint saves those files in a predictable way.

Requires ToolBook 8.5 or the Neuron runtime for ToolBook, which can be downloaded from the support pages at www.click2learn.com.

This is an unsupported utility for the convenience of Click2learn users.
